Okay, i have red eared sliders, my bf got em for me for our 5 month anniversary .. ehh. Uhm, ive had em since the end of september and i just recently got a uv light. I have no water filter so ive been cleaning the tank a lot. About how many hours a day should i leave the UV light on for? i dont put much water in there because im afraid ill drown em, so i have rocks as their bottom, and bigger basking rocks. I think i leave the UV light on too much because the water evaporates way too quickly. HELP. Im only 17 lol _________________ <3 Jess |

Red Eared sliders are very good swimmers, I have my turtles' tank full of water (29 gallons) and I made a fence that fits around the basking area so that they can't climb out.
You can leave the UV light on for as long as there is sunlight, the UV light takes the place of the sun, so you can turn it on when you wake up and turn it off when it gets dark, better yet, get a timer and set it for:
ON at 6 am.
Off at 10 pm.
Depending on when daylight comes and goes in your area, but that should be about right. If you have a ceramic heater like I do for the basking, you can leave that on all the time, that way if they get too cold, they can always get on the basking area to heat up. _________________

I think that those lights that come with the tank are just regular fluorescent lights, since the fish don't need the UV, I doubt that it has any to be of any benefit to the turtle.
The effects of not having a UV source will not be visible on the outside other than soft shell, the problems will be in the bones, something called MBD (metabolic bone disease), it means that there is not enough calcium in the bones. _________________
