I am attempting to get into breeding RES and would like to get some albinos. I used to breed birds and with them you can't breed albino to albino as it will cause deformities etc. Is this true for RES or to be sure that I get some albinos do I need to breed Albino to Albino?

Any suggestions or sites that have any info would be much appreciated, I can't seem to find any useful info. Confused

Albino RES are neat looking. For those who have never seen one the juvies are almost a lemon color. I like the color morphs my self. The coloring is very stricking and usually there is no stripes on the legs and the red is very deep and bright. The problem with these RES is that they usually have some types of deformities. Popeyes is a common one or eyes of different sizes. Small scutes and non symetrical shells is another.

Thanks that web site was interesting. You made me think of another question regarding the lemon or lemon/lime morphs that I have seen for sale. Are these actually albinos or are these partial albinos or are they just plain old albinos claiming to be lemon or lemon/lime?

You're welcome, I kinda prefer the pastel colored ones, I don't know anything about the albino turtles, I have only seen them on the net. Confused

Hi Contact.
It would be very difficult to get (and pay for) an adult pair of Albino RES and get them to make a bunch of little Albinos. The albino gene is very recessive and if the normal gene is present in one or both of the parents, the offspring have a very very low chance of being albino. I don't think it be worth paying $800 for a pair of turtles and not even being sure if they'll ever have albino offspring. If it doesnt work out, and the offspring are normal, you'll get about $6 for each, instead of $600. I would suggest maybe reconsidering this, and if you still want to breed turtles, invest in nice, large tanks and accessories, and get a more rare turtle species to breed, that you dont have to play a guessing game as to if their offspring will be worth your time or not. Diamondback Terrapins are really popular these days, and maybe you should look into that species. Good Luck,
