I have two red eared sliders, & their about 3 years old & have recently noticed that their shells are peeling, coming off in sections, is this normal...signs that they are growing, or are their shell to frail & soft? please help. |

Peeling is normal and no cause for alarm. If your turtles shell feels soft and spongy that is something very different. Is it actually soft or are you just concerned? |

i don't think they should have "normal" soft shells at the age of 3 but if they're acting fine then it's only shedding wich is a sign of growing _________________ Wed 10/27/2004 is the worst day..i lost my best friend Leo

Superstar had the same problem and I freaked... but.. yup, it's just shedding with growth. It eventually stops. I guess they are kind of like kids.. go through growth spurts and NOTHING fits!! _________________ Baby Buster Brown and Superstar

| can they lose a whole "piece" ? Our turltle just lost an entire piece and now he has a spot, my wife says it's hard. It's a whitish color. Also most of the rest of his shell is peeling "up" thanks for any help. |

execssive shedding could be a cause of a high temp. make sure they're not too high _________________ Wed 10/27/2004 is the worst day..i lost my best friend Leo

If it is about as thin as a fish scale, it should be alright, but if you see that it really looks bad, check your temps and adjust where necessary. _________________

It depends, if you have a UVA/B fluorescent bulb only, no it doesn't produce heat, but if you have one of those combo bulbs that provide both heat and UV, then, yes, it does provide heat as well. _________________

not all turtles grow at the same rate. there are many reasons that a turtle grows slower. it could be bcz of gender, females grow much faster than males do. sometimes it is bcz a turtle is sick or something.
check that for more info http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/Care/medinjuries.htm#not%20growing
