How big are they, you usually can't tell until they are at least 4 or 5 inches long. Very Happy

I wouldn't trust anything a petstore employee tells you, RES as well as other types of turtles will get to 12 inches, others will get bigger, take the common snapper turtle, I have seen a picture of one that was about two feet long or more, do a picture search to see bigger turtles, there are some pictures that show a baby along with an adult so you can see the difference.

Maintenance is an ongoing thing, they are very messy eaters so you need to change the water at least once a week (which I do), the smaller the tank, the more often you should change the water.

Typically the female will be the larger one.......the male will be smaller and have a longer tail. But that also all depends on what breed it is. Some you can tell by the color of the eyes in the springtime, others how wide the v-shaped part of the bottom rear shell is. Hope this helps.
