you guys remember how i posted how happy i was, about finding a huge male RES on the highway?
well my sis and i did the best we could for him, and even converted my bedroom floor into a pond for him.. lol.
but for some reason, he's just not adjusting.
i take him outside with me all the time.. whenever i go swimming, and he'll just crawl up to the fence (the pool is screened in) and stare through the fence for hours and hours.. it's so sad.
he just doesn't seem happy to me. and i know that probably sounds silly 'how can you tell if a turtle is happy'... but he's not up to the usual hijinks and mischeif the baby turtles are up to.. he never comes out of his hiding spot to look around (he has a HUGE pond to do that lol) and we don't think he's eating enough, even though we put everything from tuna to live fish in there.. (yes veggies and turtle food too lol) he doesnt seem satisfied. he's healthy, just miserable...
so.. my sis and i decided.. we're going to release him friday. there's a turtle pond at my university, it's this huge swamp.. and they have a huge RES colony there.. filled with tons of lady folk for him to flirt with. it should be good for him.
under normal circumstances, i'd release him back to the original spot where i found him, but... i found him on a highway.. and in louisiana, they eat turtles. (yes, they eat RES too ) so he's better off in a huge manmade swamp complete with ladies and food.
i just hope he's more happy there, and that being held captive didn't scar him for life. _________________

if u find it on a hwy, maybe it's a female who was goiing to lay eggs..that would explain why she keep to runaway.... i would put it back in the wild close to a lake or pond near the hwy where u find it... _________________ i'm not a expert,i just try to help.... |

staring for hours, yeah he sounds miserable sorry for that but maybe he'll be doing better in the wild bcz he belonged there from the beginning..make sure he'll be ok in the pond and no other turtle will try to harm him even if u think he's a big guy and will be able to handle it

We have some ponds around the city where I live that have RES in them, I even found a baby one basking one time when I was with my girlfriend, I tried to catch it (just to hold and look at ) but it was real quick, the thing was about the size of a quarter, maybe a bit bigger, so I know that the turtles do well there, also, there is a whole lot of people that go to the pond to feed the ducks and turtles so I doubt they go hungry. , I hope that is the case with the pond in your University. Keep us posted and take some pictures if you can. _________________

oh no, lol he's -definately- a male.. there's no mistaking that.. my little female turtle pox, has a crush on him even..
don't worry you guys, i'm going to take extreme care to make sure he's happy. i've only had him a couple weeks, maybe a month or two tops.. but he's like one of my babies, and i couldn't ever imagine him hurt.
he's going live in a swamp that's closed off, that means no bigger, meaner animals get into it.. the only thing that really lives in it, are cranes, koi (the fish), hundreds of frogs, and this huge turtle colony.
and people do feed the turtles lol. they have those meter things outside, that if you put 25 cents in, some food comes out, so he's not going to starve.
i just hope he's going to be a lot happier. i feel so bad looking at him and he's miserable. _________________

well mr. kane was released on friday.
much to my surpise.. he wanted to be free more then anything lol. there are these brick walls (not really, but it's just knee high so little kids can't go in the swamp..).. and kane was resting on it. i put him there so he could take a look around.
well, he poked his head out of his shell.. took one good look around, and the destination was never clearer in his mind i guess. he somehow jumped out of my hand and into the water.. and swamp off happily.
happily, my sister spotted him with a lady res yesterday.
here's a picture of where he was released, and a picture of him on his release day.
(i guess he wasn't too happy at first, i had to wake him up at 6am lol.. that's when i have to get ready for uni... ugh) _________________
