We are the newbie parents of 2 tiny RES. One has it's egg tooth/caruncle and the other doesn't. They are both about the same size... 1 1/2 - 2". The store owner said they were about 12 weeks old.
So, any others know how old they are when they lose this tooth. Does this say anything about how old the one w/ the tooth is?
Thanks

I found this quote about the egg tooth:
| Quote: | Do turtles have teeth?
While some prehistoric turtles had them, no modern turtles possess real teeth. Instead, all of the turtles alive today have very sharp beaks which the use to bite with. Hatchlings emerge from their eggs using what is commonly known as the egg-tooth or caruncle. This is located at the front of the upper jaw and typically it disappears a few months after the turtle hatches. It is a modified scale and not a real tooth.

I was just thinking 1/2 inch differance at this age is alot .
Soooooooooooo...I just got off my lazy....and mes. my babies, by the way it's not that easy when you have 22 in one tank and being the little pigs they are when you go to pick one up you have 21 more trying to get on your hand thinking FOOD, FOOD, FOOD!
My babies from mid Nov, 2004 are aprox 2 1/2", and my March, 2005 are 2" to 2 1/4" and my May,2005 are 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 ( in my other post I stated April it should have been May) this doesn't sound like a big differance but to look at them it is a big differance, the older ones are much wider and thicker. I will be doing a water change soon,I will out line some of the babies on paper, plus try to take pics. make a log so to speek.and then the hardest thing of all.........
to up load it so you can see it...lol _________________ There is nothing more exciting than to see baby Turtles, popping up out of the ground, or to find them wondering across the yard. |
