Question I have two baby turtles that are about the size of a nickle. I know your places are not pose to sell them but I was in La and saw them in a small plastick tub with hardley no water being feed dry soy beens. I new if I did not buy them they were going to die from not being cared for. I told the man there was a dead one in the next box and theses were going to die because hes not careing for them and should not be selling them this young. He have them to me for free because he did not want them and could not find any one to buy them. I now have them at home in a large plastick tub with water and a rock were they can come out of. They are now eating like piggies, baby turle floating sticks food. I dont have a light on them im afrade becase there so small they might get over heated but i do take them out side in there tub in the sun for three hours of sun and they love it. What else as far as food should I feed them and am I ok with how im taking care of them. Im a new mom here and I want theses babys to live. Im already planing on makeing a pound out side for them when they get bigger. I need all the help I can get here.... Arrow

Do they really need to have light on them even thoe I take them out side in the sun? The house is warm and I know the water in there little tank is not cold I can feel it. I do see them comeing out and drying off? Also one turtle never seems to come out of the water hes alsways in there while the other one does come out and drys out his shell is that ok or should I take him and force him to stay out?? If they get three hours of sun a day then you don't need to worry about a uv bulb. But you should have a basking light. You also should get a thermometer and check the water temp. Babies should have around 84 F. Here is a little info on basic setups for your babies. http://www.allturtles.com/care_sheets/water_turtle_carehousing.php

You can't rely on what your hands feel, what feels cool to you is actually too warm to them, I went to feel the water to see if it was good enough before I got a thermometer and to me it felt cold, so I turned up the water heater until I could feel it just barely warm, when I finally got a thermometer a day later, I found out that what I thought was fine for them turned out to be about 95 deg. or warmer, their water should be between 75 and 80 deg. F. The turtles don't just come out to dry up, they come out of the water to heat up since they are cold blooded. Very Happy

they do feel the sun and know they're getting the light they need..for the one not basking, he's probably still shy so u may want to keep the water level very shallow when they're out to force him to bask..at least the upper part of his shell will get light even if he still insists to stay in water

good luck Smile

Shy hes scaird to death, I bearly go near him and he freaks go swiming crazzyly in the water hiting his head in a corner of the tank thinking he can dig out. And all I was doing was droping in some food from them . The other one is not shy at all he comes up to my hand beggs for food and will take it out of my fingers. He is the one we call pig he can eat any thing he does not care. Rolling Eyes

their behavior is subjective and both of them are acting very normal..give the scared one some time and he'll get over it soon..when it's feeding time, put them in a small container so he sees the other one eating..try feeding the "brave" one by hand, maybe he'll feel safer and try to eat too..it'll be a bit difficult but he's gonna eat sooner or later

good luck and keep us posted

When my turtles see me, they will start begging, but when they see me get close to the tank, they will dive and freak out, until they realize that I just dropped food in the tank. Laughing Laughing
