welcome to the board
what do u mean by if it can live outside? red-eared sliders are semi-aquatics and live both on land and in water..they need water to swallow food, expose wastes, and not to dehydrate..they also need land to bask so they don't have shell problems (shell rot, soft shell...)
u can hold it and play with it but u'll have to wash ur hands really well after that..how easier could it get?
u can read the care sheets on this site..RES's are the most common pet turtles so u'll find a lot of info about them..if u need anything specific u are most welcome to ask..most of us have RES's in here and will be glad to help..good luck and tell us what happens with u _________________ Wed 10/27/2004 is the worst day..i lost my best friend Leo

maybe what you're looking for is a tortise and not a turtle..
tortise are land only types of turtle (?) well.. shelled reptile in any event.. and they don't need an aquatic set up.
they can be held too. all turtles/tortises can be held.. it's just if the critter will let you do it lol _________________
