| Hi, excuse any mistakes I may make as this is my first turtle and my first entry into a chat room. I've had my little slider for just over a month now and he seems happy and healthy. I had a lagoon for him but just upgraded to a 5 1/2 gallon tank. No I know that most people say the tank should be huge but I haven't gotten there yet. I need some type of filter. It was alot easier cleaning the lagoon-I just dumped out the water every 2 days and scrubed the rocks. In the tank I scoop out the poop and extra food (I'm even considering feeding him in a seperate contain-any feelings about that?) but I still think he needs a filter. he is little, only about 1 1/2 inches wide and 2 1/2 inches long. I bought the Fluval 1 Plus submerseval filter but it required too much water (turtle did not like the bottom being so far away!) and the flow was really strong. I've thought about the Penn Plax Small World Pump and Kilter Kit or the Tom Repti Clean Filter. Don't get me wrong, I realize I will need to empty and replace at least some water every other day and then completely change once a week-I'm fine with that-I just think he needs a filter too. Maybe I'm wrong?? Thanks for any help!!!! |

Welcome to the board.
I have recently upgraded from a 10 gallon tank, I use two of those cascade filters which I know are too small for it but I need to save money for a bigger filter, for the 5 gallon tank, you can use one of those cascades, and the water level can be all the way to almost the top, especially if you have a basking area with a basking light, since he is small, you can get some fake plants that reach the surface so that he has somewhere to rest while getting used to the water level. _________________

ur little guy will outgrow is new tank pretty fast...maybe u should keep on clean it the same way that u use to with the lagoon...ur filter need to be a least rate for 3 time the size of ur tank(since they are made for fish and turtle are way more messy!) but buying filtre, lightning and all those other basic need for ur turtle will cost a bit...so maybe u should upgrade to a bigger tank who will last for a couple years...just a suggestion to keep ur cost as minimun as possible... _________________ i'm not a expert,i just try to help.... |
