alright, i've got a HUGE amount of fully cooked ready to eat crab meat.. see i bought a LOT of it because i was making sushi.. and a horrible incident happened.. and now there's tons of it.
anywho, i was wondering if you think it'd be safe to give to my turtles. i think it would be, but i'm just looking for a second opinion.
here's the ingredients: fish protein (alaska pollock, pacific whiting, cod_ water, egg whites, wheat startch, sugar, modified wheat starch, 2 % or less of snow crab meat, natural and afticial flavor, extracts of crab, scallop, and oyster, rice wine, salt, sorbitol, carrageenan, yam flour, hydrolyzed soy, corn,, and wheat proteins, disodium inosinate, and guamylate, sodium pyrophosphate, color.
it has next to no nutritional value, but i have vitamin powder to take care of that. and they won't get just that, but mixed with regular food. it has no fat either.
what does anyone think? opinions?
(and on a side note, i'd just like to compliment the attitudes and passion of helping turtles that people have on this site. i've recently bought some hermit crabs and i joined a hermit crab message board.. because hermit crabs are totally foreign to me, and i just found out they're considered 'exotic' pets.. so i naturally want to care for them as best as i could.. anyway, i was questioning hermit crab diets.. because they said commerical grade hermit crab food contains toxins.. well a lady on there told me to read a care sheet (after i posted i couldnt download them) and told me not to ask again becuase it was already covered.
..............
i found that quite rude.. but then my sister pointed out that i was trying to talk to people who play with crabs all day.. what in the world was i thinking.. lol) _________________

I had a similar situation with another turtle board, they got pissed because I put a link to this board, like I told them "aren't we supposed to be helping the turtles? what does it matter where the help comes from?"
So I left.
Sorry, I don't know about the crab meat, but I figure that if they are opportunistic eaters and they eat snails (which are crustaceans), I think that it would be ok, unless the crabs have some chemical in them that might hurt the turtle, but if it did, it would probably hurt us, well you guys, I don't like crab meat. _________________

I don't think I would chance it. Not to the turtles...Maybe my cats, but then my cats eat pizza. Just my opinion. _________________ There is nothing more exciting than to see baby Turtles, popping up out of the ground, or to find them wondering across the yard. |

If you have a lot of left overs, make small packages of it and freeze it, then you can thaw out what you need, and not waste it. just a thought... _________________ There is nothing more exciting than to see baby Turtles, popping up out of the ground, or to find them wondering across the yard. |

Kitty, you are a very thoughtful person (pun intended)
I agree with kitty, rather than risk your turtle's health, I would freeze it until I found out for sure about their safety for turtles, maybe get in touch with a herpetological society or turtle organization. _________________

..needless to say.. i think my account there got frozen because i said to them what i just told you. damned crabby women.. .:: rolls eyes ::.
well as far as i can tell, it doesn't seem that harmless. i mean.. i eat it. i'm still alive, the dog eats it.. my hermit crabs eat it (LOL CANNIBALS!) and they're still crawling.. i was just curious. i know my RES would eat it, but the RBC like a litte more vegetation (they eat carrots like kids eat candy). thank you
lol that's okay, i'm not a real big sea food eater either. i'll eat imitation crab meat sometimes.. and fried squid _________________

thank you all for you comments. i'm going to harrass my vet next time i see him mowing the lawn.. (he lives across the street)
and if he can't find out for me.. my sis works in a bio lab.. or at least knows a couple bio professors.. if they don't know.. then i'm going to be introuble
i know the kids at my college feed the turtles ham sandwhiches, french fries, and hamburgers.. but i'm not risking my little babies health.
(we have a swamp at my college.. hahaha how more cajun can you get? if you ever saw the movie The Waterboy.. THAT"S where i live.. LOL!) _________________
