I have 3 RES's---2 females in a 100 gallon tank and a male in a 50. I separated them a couple of years ago because the male harassed the females to the point of biting and breaking skin.
Now I am thinking of getting rid of the tanks and installing a large indoor turtle pond. Some questions:
1. I'd like to put them all together again---what size pond, and in a large pond, will there be enough room so the females can get away from the male when he pesters them?
2. If I stick with a tank, about what size would you all recommend?
2. Is one large basking area OK, or do I need to have two? I don't think the male bothers the females out of the water.
I'm going to post this to tanks and ponds, too. Thanx |

cool i love ponds
hmmm ok let's see..i read that if all turtles have enough space then they wouldn't annoy each other. for better results, give each a seperate area and a hiding space wouldn't be bad so they feel safer..but for ur guys reaction, u can't take that into granted bcz not all turtles act in the same way
anyways good luck and keep us posted..pix would be appreciated too _________________ Wed 10/27/2004 is the worst day..i lost my best friend Leo

well if you want to get bigger tanks, i think the rule is 55 gallons per turtle.
like ms. dixiee said, if you have enough space and seperate hiding places, the turtles won't harm each other.
you're looking at getting a pretty big tank there.. i've read on a site that you can use those pond bases for a tank instead of an actual tank, because otherwise all that glass would cost too much.
you could also use a really large rubbermaid or tupperware container to put them in. maybe put the male in a tank by itself if you can't get one big enough to take care of their needs. _________________

| Yeah, I am looking at a pond instead of a tank. I have the male separated now, but want to consolidate into one habitat enclosure. |

i suggest that you make two basking areas so they dont fight when they bask |

The only time my Turtles fight is during breeding season, and in the water. the males will fight sometimes, but the poor females get chaced around, Well I think they pretend to be running...lol Cause I know the females can move faster than that. When they bask, on the bank and on the logs, it looks like a huge parking lot, shell to shell, but then some mornings, its a major pile up on the free way, Turtles stacked 2 and 3 high facing this way and that. looks like they have been playing Twister all night..LOL If you plan on expanding I would put them all together, in the new home at the same time, just watch them, but give it a chance. They may have to establish there peeking order. _________________ There is nothing more exciting than to see baby Turtles, popping up out of the ground, or to find them wondering across the yard. |
