Hi...I am new to this message board, and to owning a slider turtle! My Problem is I don\'t know too much about things that turtles are SUPPOSED to do, but my turtle keeps spitting! It will do it alot in the morning and wake me up, but when I get up and cut its light on it will stop. Is this normal? I have had the turtle for about 3 months now and it just started doing this about a week ago. The turtle eats (alot) and LOVES to eat. It doesn\'t really get out of the water and bask alot....but it used to (I refer to the turtle as IT because I don\'t know if it is a boy or girl!). What could be the problem and what should I do!?

Well, describe your setup, do you have a basking light, how high up is it, what wattage, what are the temp., water and basking. It could be that the water is warmer than the basking area, the basking area should be around 90 to 95 deg. F. and the water temp. should be under 80 but not below 70. _________________

welcome to the board:)
what is the turtle spitting? food??
if it spits food while eating then it\'s ok but if it does it later then that\'s not a good sign..what do u feed it?
btw, what\'s the size of ur turtle? it might be easy to tell if it\'s a he or she depending on the size:) _________________ Wed 10/27/2004 is the worst day..i lost my best friend Leo

Thanks to u 2 for helping me! My turtle did the whole spitting thing again this morning....The turtles basking area is a log-type thing that is about 6 inches in diameter. I know for sure that the basking area is hotter than the water. I do have a heating blanket that I keep on med. all day long...so that the temp is warm and the same at night when the light is out. I do have another quick question...does the light HAVE to be a heat lamp..or can it be a light bulb with high wattage? Right now I have a little light bulb (can\'t think of the watts off head)but it makes the basking area hot. Could that be the problem? The turtle is not spitting food...it is spitting spit! I don\'t believe it is the food. I am not at home so I don\'t know the exact name brand..but it is made for turtle. Oh, and the turtle is about 2 1/2 inches long, and about 2 inches wide.

i just use a regular light bulb and have for close to a year now. it works just the same, as long as it is keeping the basking area warm. _________________

spitting spit? turtles don\'t have saliva to spit..is it like digested food or what? or maybe u mean ur turtle is making bubbles in the water? do u see that?? cz if so then it\'s normal _________________ Wed 10/27/2004 is the worst day..i lost my best friend Leo

I guess that it is little bubbles then....i just swore that it was spit though because its like bubbles around the edges of the tank. Are they supposed to make a funny sound when they do it too? It will do it at like 7:00 in the morning and wake me up!! Oh well, I guess as long as it is normal then I will be okay!

little bubbles are ok if they\'re not from the nose..i know i\'m making this confusing but if ur turtle is eating, swimming, basking, and acting normally then there\'s nothing to worry about..he might be making the bubbles to play..one of my turtles makes bubbles and eat them, he\'s so stupid:) _________________ Wed 10/27/2004 is the worst day..i lost my best friend Leo

i have no idea why your turtle is spitting, but telling their gender is easy.
male red eared sliders have long tails
and female red eared sliders have short stubby tails. (^__^) hope that helps! _________________

Also, the poop hole on females is closer to the bottom part of the shell and on males it is further away from the shell. _________________
