Box turtles are great for begginers. They are fun and easy to care for. We do have a picture and a brief descripiton of a box under the green button that says \"turtle species\" that is located at the top of the page. Here is the link http://www.allturtles.com/turtle_species/box.php

Here is the description:

Box Turtle: Terrapene ornata ornata

Geographical Region: There are different types of box turtle species that live all over the world.
Size: Between 5 to 6 inches. Males have longer tails than females.
Habitat: They are land animals that prefer moist areas. Sometimes spotted in fields and forests.
Food: Omnivorous; they eat insects, fruits, and veggies.
Interesting Fact: A box turtle lives most of its long life in a small parcel of land near its place of birth. This area is known as its home range, an area not much larger than a couple of football fields.

i saw pix of a red foot i think if it\'s the same one as cherry i don\'t know what..

anyways i saw a land turtle today in a festival..they were selling birds and fish in the street and i spotted that miserable turtle..it was in a small box with another smaller turtle..the big one was about 4 inches and the smaller was about half the size..they looked so miserable especially the bigger one..didn\'t move and were just laying there as if waiting their destiny..i felt so bad for them and wanted to take them home although am not that much into land turtles but i knew i would love them later..that bigger one also had something on it\'s shell which looked like a bird\'s poop..i don\'t know if this is shell rot or poop..the problem was that they costed $25 each..i didn\'t have that amount to get both + a cage for them...and they didn\'t look like they\'ll live a lot..i feel so bad for those poor turtles

This might help:
Quote:
What is the difference between a turtle and a tortoise?

In common usage in the United States, the word turtle is an inclusive word that refers to all species of water turtle, sea turtle, box turtle, terrapin and tortoise. The word tortoise refers to a particular type of turtle that is well adapted to life on land.

Scientists group all turtles together in the \"order\" known as TESTUDINES. This order includes about a dozen living \"families\" of turtle. Tortoises are a specialized clade or subgroup of the order TESTUDINES that are known as the Testudinidae.

According to Dr. Kristin Berry, the following distinction is made between the terms turtle and tortoise in the US:

A tortoise is a land dwelling turtle with high domed shell and columnar, elephant-shaped hind legs. Tortoises go to water only to drink or bathe.
In contrast, the word turtle is used for other turtles: pond turtles, river turtles, box turtles, musk turtles, sea turtles, etc.

So, tortoises form a subgroup that can be distinguished from other groups of turtle but they are \"turtles\" nonetheless.

the eastern is native to were i am so the weather is easyer on it as for the ornate it is more of a desert type it likes warmer dyier areas, the eastern dosnt requier much heat they burrow most of the day under the grass and come oout at night when its not so hot, as for the enclosure i have a small pool for them with rocks on the sides do they can get in and out, "bed a burrow" made from natural materials so its safer, grass on one end moist dirt on the other i'll try to post up pics because my discription isnt that good, but any ??? let me know Laughing
