I have a baby snapping turtle. I don\'t want to let it go because it is so tiny, I am afraid it will get eaten by another snapping turtle or something else. Can I keep it as a pet? Right now Ihave it in a tank with water and dry spots it can lay on-- it seems to like the water best. I bougt it food, it is too small to eat fish yet. Someone told me turtles need to hibernate so I don\'t want to hurt it by keeping it. Please respond if you know anthing about snapping turtles. THANKS!

You really should talk to Rodeo144, and I have a feeling that in the near future you will, but I can help a little.

Where did you get the turtle? In the wild?

How big is the tank? How big is the turtle?

You won\'t hurt it by keeping it, I got two of my turtles from the wild.

If it is inside you probably won\'t need to hybernate it, but I\'ve never done hybernating, exept outside.

Feed it as much as it\'s head, I think.

I dont see any harm in keeping the turtle (I would probably do the same thing seeing as some are eaten in the wild) But a few things you should know about snappers...

They eat like cows. They can eat, and eat and eat. Depending on what other obligations you have, it could get a little costly.

They get huge. He may look small now, but look forward to have a huge tank/pond when he gets full size, full grown he is the size of a car tire.

They are usually very agressive and after a few years a bite could really cause some damage.
I have a 8yr old snapper that is a little over 10lbs. in a 240gallon tank. We got him when he was the size of a silver dollar pankcake. We caught him, and were planning on letting him go but in michigan, you cant let anything go in the wild, even if you caught it there.

When we first got our snapper we kept him in a 20gallon long tank, with heater, lights, basking spot out of water and bricks set up like a box so he could hide inside. We feed ours minnows, goldfish, pinky mice, chicken liver... and as he got bigger veggies. (well mine wouldnt eat veggies for a long time lol) Snappers arent really a basking turtle, mine hardly ever comes out of the water, maybe once a week to warm up. No, what I meant was that snappers are bigger than RES. So if the RES was the girl, she would probably die \'cause the eggs would be too big. You can\'t breed Teacup Chiuhuahuas (even to boy Teacups) because the puppies are too big and they kill the momma. So fix those Teacups! (my aunt has two teacups Chihuahuas, a boy and a girl.)

I know what you meen, my Painter Turtles started biteing each other, well BigFoot (the bigger one) would bite LittleFoot..It got really bad, i seperated them for a while. BigFoot was a hyper turtle who wanted food and attention all the time. LittleFoot was hyper too, but he didn\'t act like he was food deprived as much as BigFoot did.
